Natural zeolites as host matrices for the development of low-cost and stable thermochemical energy storage materials

Abstract Advanced thermal energy storage technologies based on physical adsorption and chemical reactions of thermochemical materials (TCMs) are capable storing large shares renewable with high density. Further research development is required to improve the performance reduce cost these materials. A promising approach developing low-cost TCM use natural zeolite adsorbents as host matrices in salt-loaded composite TCM. In this study, properties various species zeolites from deposits across Canada were investigated. Two purity crystal (HPC) Trans (TC-HPC) Juniper Creek (J-HPC) British Columbia determined have highest water uptake capacity (0.145 g/g 0.113 g/g, respectively) enthalpy (408 J/g 304 J/g, respectively). Despite having approximately half commercially available synthetic 13X, ($CAD/kWh th ) was be 72–79% lower than that zeolite. Repeated desorption experiments demonstrated hydrothermal stability HPC over multiple charge discharge cycles. Overall, experimental results analysis indicate Canadian alternatives pursuit stable
